Penn State University Sex Scandal

Yup. You just read the headline correctly. Since the majority of my readers are across the US, you may not have heard about the recent sex scandal surrounding Penn State. Why am I talking about this University? I attended it for four years.

Jerry Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions, has been arrested and charged with fondling, and having sex with eight boys over the span of fifteen years. Sandusky denies the allegations, but law enforcement didn't stop there. Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, both Penn State officials were arrested for perjury (lying) and failure to report the incidents to police.

Why Paterno? when told of the allegations by an assistant, Joe Paterno reported the concerns to his supervisor, who failed to act on the information. Arguments surround Paterno, accusing him of not informing law enforcement of the situation. Other athletic employees were accused of similar charges, but cited "fear of losing my job" for not reporting the matter to authorities. The stink does not end there. Evidence suggests that the police chief of Penn State was aware of the allegations and did not appropriately act to address or report them. Just as bad, Graham Spanier, the president of Penn State, knew about the allegations and chose not to act on them.

Many students were interviewed by local media. The majority were "sad", "confused", or chose to deny the allegations against anyone from Penn State. As the evidence unfolds, students and former alumnus who deny the fact cannot run for long, unfortunately.

It is a scandal that tarnishes the reputation of a fine college football program that has produced amazing players. The blemish of child sex abuse will forever stain the good name of Penn State. There have been calls for the resignation of Gary Schultz, Tim Curley, Graham Spanier, and Joe Paterno. Schultz and Curley have already stepped down. The board of trustees is set to fire Joe Paterno within a few days to a few weeks. As for Spanier, who has pledged "unconditional support" in legal protection for Schultz and Spanier will not be investigated, according to the board. Lack of a in house investigation will not stop the prodding of law enforcement, however- as this scandal will unfold in court.
