WOW TCG Canceled: Upper Deck "Under-handed"
Well, the gig is up for UDE- the World of Warcraft TCG will no longer be produced by Upper Deck Entertainment, and the card game is canceled. Here is a Q&A session about what I know.
Q.) Why was the game canceled?
A.) Blizzard, the company who holds all the rights to everything world of warcraft, decided not to renew their license with upper deck entertainment. The reasons for this decision are unknown. It is widely speculated that Blizzard is unhappy with the way UDE is producing the card game.
Q.) Why is UDE behaving weird?
A.) UDE shut down their forums, they will not answer any questions, and it is like they no longer care about World of Warcraft. Their business practices are definitely suspect and are rude to their customers. While UDE has shown poor manners in the past, it may be that, by law, they cannot talk about the card game any further. UDE has been sued countless times in the past three years over baseball cards, and especially the rights to produce the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG.
Q.) Will the rest of Block 4 be finished?
A.) As of the end of March 2010, scourgewar will be the last box set produced by UDE. No new products will be released. The class decks, the two remaining booster sets, and the raid deck Ice Crown Citadel have all been canceled. The answer to the original question is "no".
Q.) What will happen to the crafting redemption program?
A.) This program has been scrapped and you can no longer redeem materials for cards.
Q.) What will happen to all of my UDE points?
A.) No one knows for certain at this time, but it is assumed that you can no longer spend them.
Q.) Will someone else pick up the TCG?
A.) The answer is looking like a "yes". Blizzard has opened a new forum here. At the current time, we do not know if the game will be picked up again, and if so, when. All analyzed messages point to the idea that Blizzard is in the process of continuing where UDE left off.
Q.) Has Blizzard commented on the issue?
A.) Only a little more than UDE. Blizzard expresses interest in the card game and sees it as possibly lucrative. Eyonix, an employee from Blizzard, commented that the game is in transition to Blizzard and details will be provided ASAP. The one line we have is "players can look forward to new content".
Perhaps they will do Ulduar!
