Ramifications of PSU's Child Sex Abuse Coverup
It's something you can't really ignore as a former Penn State student. While I had no involvement in the athlethic program, it hits home to hear that not only were several victims abused by a man named Jerry Sandusky, but that top university officials were complicit in attempting to cover up the situation for the prestige of their positions and/or the university, instead of doing the right thing and stopping Sandusky.
PSU faces several investigations. The NCAA will be releasing tomorrow their verdict on what punishments will be dealt to the football program. Unofficial sources released by ESPN (a 80% Disney company) say that the NCAA will not institute the "1death penalty" on the football program, but will take away football scholarships (amounting to money for Penn State) and bowl appearances. I am not a follower of college sports, so I would not know if the bowl appearances would actually damage the college.
On that note, I hold no bitter animosity towards the college as a whole. I do, however reserve feelings towards the individuals responsible in the coverup. In response to receiving information from the college, the head of the NCAA said something to the like of "These are unprecedented circumstances", meaning that, obviously, the university [Penn State] screwed up. Big time.
Now that the nuke has detonated, it is time to describe the fallout that ensues [the ramifications].
_________________________
1) Penn State faces Department of Education 2fines, on multiple indictments; and may lose some or all federal aid supplied by the government (a disaster).
2) Penn State faces lawsuits and fines from the United States Federal Government, and a possible FBI investigation.
3) Penn state faces a plethora of lawsuits filed against them by the victims of Jerry Sandusky.
4) Levies against the football program could cost Penn State millions of dollars (losses from shutdown of football program or removal of scholarships, or from players choosing to play elsewhere in light of the scandal)
5) Penn State faces NCAA punishments tomorrow against their football program.
6) Penn State faces an educational review and investigations by the US federal government.
7) Penn State faces review for money grants from the State of Pennsylvania.
There are obviously more ramifications that I have not listed, not to mention the fallout from a damaged reputation. Penn State has a lot to fix, and they need to start that process by reviewing core educational values, institutional values, and reevaluate the rabid, religious like football culture that pervades the college.
Unfortunately, the town of state college will suffer if the football program does. State college's profits come almost solely from Penn State football.
Footnotes
1- In the NCAA, the death penalty means a suspension of a university's program for a minimum of 1 year.
2- The department of education will be reconsidering financial aid, and may issue fines- against Penn State.
