Berks BAD at Weather Cancellations
So the topic of the week is snow cancellations. Penn State Berks is notoriously bad at inclement weather cancellations. Even when 65 school districts in the surrounding area (including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.) are closed, PSU Berks is open for business.
The controversy has really stirred this semester as last second cancellations have angered faculty, staff and students. Indecision at the top of the system has brought students and others onto hazardous roads for the sake of not shutting down a million plus dollar operation.
Some professors have complained to the Chancelory. Including rhetoric that won't be typed here, people are certainly irrate about the weather conditions, and the inability of Penn State to properly close school. We are all human, right? well, a couple of problems have arisen...
Tuesday, Janaury 18th, classes were open in the morning up until 10am, bringing some commuter students in. Some did not come in, and professors began canceling classes because they could not make it, or did not want students to come to class. Despite other districts and colleges closing the night before, Berks wanted their students to come in, then when they got here, go to class for 30 minutes, then immediately cancel classes, and drive home in the bad weather conditions.
The same thing occurred Wednesday, January 26th. Berks held off until the last second, bringing in commuters with hazardous road conditions. I have received reports of faculty getting into accidents attempting to get here to work. Maybe the decision maker is sticking their finger in the ground and reciting "huh", or maybe they are following radar. One thing is for sure: Penn State Berks cannot properly declare a school closing.
Come in at your own risk. ANGEL some work if you need to.
