The Ease of the Internet and Fanboys

The internet truly is a convenient place to find information... and share it. It is much easier to remain anonymous and post inflaming opinions on the internet than deal with conflict in real life. Some don't let that deter them though- and whether on the internet or outside, we refer to them as "fanboys".

It may seem condescending to criticize fanboys, but with a philosophy that video games of all mediums should be enjoyed by everyone, it was forthcoming.

UrbanDictionary.com defines a fanboy in a couple of ways. The following paraphrases capture the essence of a fanboy completely, in no specific order:

1) Loyalty to a game company or game regardless of market stature
2) Arrogant person with outbursts when something they like is criticized.
3) Believed the EGM termed "console war" is a real war that needs fighters for their chosen console.

My problems with fanboys extend not with their game favorites, but with their attitudes. In short, they have problems being a normal person because they feel criticisms are not a fair way to judge a video game. I have heard rare, secluded opinions that Ocarina of Time "wasn't glitzy enough". Even with a failure of explanation, one can dismiss a claim without beating someone over the head with their loyalty. You don't have to "condescend" yourself either by saying "they are entitled to an opinion and mine is equal to theirs" when, in reality, whether your opinion is worth more than theirs or not, they remain unequal.

Sure, I have my favorite systems. The key difference is that I am not an ass about someone's choice to prefer an Xbox 360 over my Playstation 3 or Wii. Go with what makes you happy, and share the experience with other gamers, offering unbiased perspectives into your favorite games. You don't have to like a particular genre, company or video game, but please, stop being an ass about it. I have seen good people turned off to a particular video game or console because people were playing without consideration for the handicap new players or casual players were at. Don't keep the game fun just for you- keep the game fun for everyone.
