1-35 Tamiya IDF Merkava Mk II 95% Complete

Looks like this one is just about ready to be wrapped up in a blanket. There is something about paint that gives a model a whole new look- besides the color I think it is the texture. Tamiya paints add such a nice texture to my models, which is why I use them. There isn't a lot of information regarding this kit out there (other than on Armorama.com) so I thought I would talk about it.

Like all the armor kits I've been buying lately the Merkava is a re-issue of a later 1980's kit. You can appreciate the detail that went into this kit at the time it was made- injection markers, flash and other obscenities are absent on the side the detail is presented. Since my selection was limited to Korean War and WWII subjects, I was not ready for the size of the Merkava- this was a big tank! I had no idea that modern tanks were this much bigger than their WWII ancestors.

The geometry of the Merkava, especially around the turret is unconventional and interesting. Construction of this tank wasn't bad, but if this kit were made within the past 5 years I would say that they were cutting corners so to speak. This tank falls into the category of the "old" building method I have- two edges are glued together with minimal supports, thus it is hard to glue them at (the typical) 90 degrees. Namely, the skirts were somewhat challenging to install- I don't want to call the installation difficult. Plastic weld helped in this respect- it literally fused the parts together. The Engineers thought ahead with this kit for its time- two polycaps in the front allowed you to snap the lower hull to the upper hull necessary. I thank them for this because I would have had to seal the hull, and then attaching the tracks would have been a real pain because I installed the skirts already, and they wern't moving.

I was suprised the paint came out so well for an older kit- the spraying temperature was around 60 degrees farenheight, a little lower than I wanted. Now all I need to do is add some gunmetal, black to the front rubber panels (you know the things behind tractor trailer wheels? I am talking about those). For $26.00 MSRP this is still a pretty good buy- I was able to produce a good kit out of it. Merkava enthusiasts will nark on me for this that I did not include the cage behind the turret or the cables. This is because I messed up the cage and the ropes broke- I am not a big stickler for detail and I'm happy with the Mark II that I have.

Merkava comes from the Hebrew word "Merkabah", referring to the Chariot of God from the Book of Ezekiel.

1-35 Tamiya IDF Merkava Mk I Terrain

Working on the terrain this weekend. I realized something before it was too late- I could have built up the base material to make sand dunes! To try and preserve what I've got anyways I am going to do an overall spray of scenic cement (requiring an attachment) to cement down the stuff. Another blunder also crossed my mind: get some friggin' play sand! Then the question becomes how do I properly cement that sand to the base material? There is some goop out there and I am not sure where to get it.

Anywhoo- I need to take a trip out to Hobbytown tomorrow and get this spray gun. I am HOPING that when I do an overall spray that the turf does not clump- I am counting on the fineness of the turf as detail for the sand particles. The sand to me... feels a little too "mellow" of a yellow, almost like pixie dust. I would like to paint the turf (sounds crazy, eh?) a lighter sand color then see if my merkava really needs some paint or not. I am playing with shades and hopefully I pick the right ones.
I think it would be a good idea if I spray a sample patch first before spraying the whole dang thing- incase the stuff does clump I can at least save the top layer of sand that has not settled into the clay yet. Why did I use clay? Well, once the turf has settled I can then repress the tracks into the sand and get those track marks- after all

Tamiya 1-35 Panzer Kampfwagen II Ausf F/G Complete

I strolled into Hobbytown today for any on sale kits they are trying to get rid of. I saw a couple of ships and noted that I have many to finish. I also saw two German WWII tanks that were on sale, a german panther (great pickup for the price) and the Ausf. F/G. the F/G was a one night building session and it is finished, complete with tracks. I am going to try a new process of masking by using clay to attempt a camo job. Hey- the worst that could happen is that it doesn't work- I can take the clay right off and water the tank down.

Michigan CRUSHED in a lead by Penn State: Nittany Lions 8-0

One thing binds all Penn State students together, regardless if you like it or not: college football. For 9 years Penn State has been defeated by the Michigan Wolverines. Tonight was an amazing game of football up unil the end of the 3rd quarter. The Wolvernines were agressive in the 1st quarter, but the Nittany Lions fought back and won the game. One wonders how we will do against Ohio State next week, a notoriously hard opponent. One of the biggest rivalries in the Big 10 Conference is Michigan Vs. Ohio State, but now Ohio State must worry about the Nittany Lions. I was never really into football until I came to Penn State; many will tell you the same thing. I also lost my voice!

Traveling Overseas

You wouldn't think I would be the person to do this- but for years I have had the desire to travel overseas someday. Lately I have been having dreams where I touch down in another country and I explore. I woke up this morning remembering that I was in Germany and I was enjoying all of the sights.

Thus I am a tourist, but I want to be much more than a tourist. I would like to be a "foreign visitor" to avoid the bad rap regarding tourists. This isn't just in Germany- but wherever and whenever a tourist visits any new country. One thing I am afraid of is the same prejudices that are found here in the US: Locals don't like tourists. I may be an American citizen but I am definitely NOT fond of our government or some ways of life. Perhaps I should do a month or two dedicated to discovering Europe? Man is that gonna cost some doh. Pictures above that I found of Berlin, Germany. Credit goes to the creators.

Tech Evolving at a Fast Pace

\Aside from the obvious, technology has come a long way in the past decade. This is a nostaligic post so here we go....

10 years ago I had my red Game Boy Pocket. If I wanted to use a computer we had to use the family computer, which had a 20GB hard drive (I think?) and 256MB of ram or less. We used Discs but Floppy Disks were still common place. I didn't have a cell phone either- those were cumbersome (big) and expensive. If we wanted directions we consulted a map or asked locals. Email was in its infancy.

Today is so much different. I have a Nintendo DS that plays 3d games, My computer runs a 160GB Hard Drive, on top of that I have an external hard drive that can connect to any machine. I am running 2GB of ram. I use my hard drive more often then discs, and my flash drives just went extinct. I now have my own cell phone and I can text message for free- sometimes this is very convinient. I don't have a GPS- but the family does. Like the family computer of old- someday GPS units will be so cheap it's insane. I use email daily.

Whats Your Opinion On the App Killer?

Apple admitted to an application killer in their Iphones and even worse, on a similar note, Sony will not admit to a kill switch in their devices as many of their devices failed unexpectedly around the world all on the same day. Android, backed up by Google, now admits that they have app killers. What is your opinion on App Killers?

For me, it depends on what the application is and what the terms in the agreement were on. If I paid for a service that will last 30 days, say access to a music store to download free music, then I expect in 30 days for the music store to be disabled, but NOT my music files to be disabled. This is why we must read the user liscense agreement to see what the terms of service entail- however if companies are being quiet about terms that are happening that are not agreed upon then I would have a beef. Nintendo DS-i hits Japan- PC World Reported

C'mon, Nintendo! I just got this thing a year ago!

PC World reported on the new Nintendo DS-i, the next handheld release by Nintendo. The DSi features a camera (of really good quality) and a few nifty features. It seems like Nintendo is going to start making DSi exclusive games, ending the age of the DS. I just got my DS a year ago and I havn't really gotten to play with it much. I still like it, and the DSi will be able to play DS games, but not Game Boy games- the end of the age of the Gameboy is upon us. The system pricetag is $180 USD, it is still not enough to get me to buy this new handheld, sorry Nintendo.

"Im a PC!" (TM) Advertising- Microsoft Digging their Own Grave With Windows 7

Windows 7 is a trademark of Microsoft.

To boost sales of the failing Vista operating system, Windows has employed a new marketing strategy to recognize the users as "unique" in becoming "My PC" to counter the sucess of Apple's Mac series.

In reality, I could care less about marketing gimmicks and calling the same thing by another name- an operating system is an operating system. Vista is nifty sure, but many people are still sticking with Windows XP. The next operating system to come out will be Windows 7. Windows wants to make the online experience full and complete- everything you do on your computer is connected to the internet.

HUGE mistake.

By connecting every operation to the internet you run a much higher risk of identity theft and hacker foreplay, the ladder leading to a hacked system. I am not sure what Microsoft was thinking- but the next OS will be a flop. A lot of people are going towards MAC and for good reason- they work and can support Windows as an OS. Sadly, not every program was written for MAC, but every program was at least written for Windows, save a select few.

I am going to keep Windows XP for as long as I can- and my laptop runs on Vista, which is fine. This is a technological period where innovation and new ways of thinking are landing big sales (Nintendo Wii), but this is NOT how you make an Operating System. Get rid of all the bad people in the world Microsoft and then I might consider trying Windows 7. Ensure me that malice will not happen.

The Recycling Project

We all know that recycling is green: businesses go green to save green and everyone else goes green to reduce their ecological footprint.

I wanted to run a personal experiment for the month of October. For one month I will record how much I am recycling and what I am recycling. I will report back with how much I have saved and the approximate weight of material recycled (I don't know how much will be recovered in the recycling process, so I will report "material recycled"). This includes paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass and anything else plastic that is acceptable to recycle. I also do not dispose of batteries, but I do collect them for disposal later. It is the same with all the chemicals I use when doing model building- any pain thinner, paint, etc is somewhat neutralized with mineral spirits then I will wait to take it to a proper disposal facility.
